Abstract
The ammoxidation of a compound, which contains at least one alkyl group, to give a corresponding nitrile yields very good results when a novel catalyst is used. This catalyst consists of a porous support which has a surface of more than 50 m<2>/g and a porosity of more than 0.4 cm<3>/g and which contains vanadium oxide and an alkali metal compound essentially within the pores. The ratio of the weight of vanadium oxide to support is 0.3:1 to 3:1, and the molar ratio of vanadium to alkali metal is between 2:1 and 30:1.
