Abstract

1535167 Crucibles BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 19 Dec 1975 [19 Dec 1974] 55072/74 Heading F4B A crucible used for producing molten metal by aluminothermic reaction is provided with a two-part preformed refractory lining 2 comprising lower and upper coaxial frustoconical parts 4, 6 joined together at 8 by a suitable cement. The parts 4 and 6 are formed so that the wall of the finished lining has an increasing radial thickness from top to bottom. The lining 2, which may consist of magnesite which has been treated with sulphuric acid to form chemical sulphate bonds between the magnesite particles, is positioned within an outer steel shell 16, and compacted and hardened refractory sand 18 fills the space between the shell and lining. Four L-shaped retaining members 20 are provided at the top of the shell. Molten metal leaves the crucible through a bottom outlet defined by a nozzle 14 located within a funnel-shaped member 12.
