Abstract
1534955 Endothermic reactions P J HASTWELL 30 April 1976 [5 May 1975] 17835/76 Headings F4H and F4U In a method for continuously cooling a fluid medium passing through a heat exchange coil 7 in the base of a column 1, an endothermic substance in crystal form disposed at the base of the column dissolves in a solvent and thereby absorbs heat to cool the fluid medium. A heating device 4 in the upper region of the column 1 causes the solvent to vaporize and pass to a condenser 11; the endothermic substance, crystallizing, with the crystals falling under gravity to the base of the column. The solvent condensate is returned to the base of the column 1 via a storage tank 15, a flow regulating valve 17, and a heat exchanger 18. The method preferably operates under vacuum. The heating device may be coupled to a solar heat exchanger. A grid 22 is provided in the column beneath the heating device to limit turbulence, and a spray entrainer 24 is provided above the heating device to limit loss of endothermic substance from the column. Preferred endothermic substances for use in the method are ammonium nitrate, ammonium thiocyanate, potassium nitrite, or potassium thiocyanate. A series of columns may be connected together (Fig. 2, not shown), the condenser associated with one column acting as the heating device of the adjacent column.
