Abstract

1332755 Heat exchangers UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 26 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30248/71 Heading F4S [Also in Division G6] In a heat exchange structure comprising a plurality of planar hollow heat exchange elements 5 interconnected by passages 6. Coolant liquid from a central common supply pipe 9 enters the elements 5 through openings 10 in the pipe 9 and is uniformly distributed by means of a flow distributer layer provided on the internal surfaces of the elements, the layer being in the form of a porous wick 7 having a plurality of capillary passages. Suitable materials for the wick 7 are porous or fluid-permeable metals, ceramics, fibrous matting or woven metal mesh such as fine stainless steel wire. In a modification (not shown) the separate heat exchange elements 5 are replaced by a single hollow helical member. The coolant liquid, which serves to cool fluid passing over the external surface of the elements 5, is vaporized, the resulting vapour passing upwardly through the passages 6 and elements 5. The heat exchange structure may be used for cooling lithium in a thermonuclear fusion reactor, the coolant liquid being liquid potassium. Alternatively the heat exchange structure may be used for cooling air in an air conditioning system, or for cooling a static body of fluid in which it is immersed.
