Abstract

1529936 Producing hot worked sintered metal compacts KAWASAKI STEEL CORP 11 Nov 1976 [18 Nov 1975] 47082/76 Heading C7D A sintered metal compact with a density of 95-100% theoretical is made by packing a metallic powder, particle size < 1 mm. in a metal container, covering with a carbonaceous powder layer which is not in contact with the powder charge and heating to 0À67M-(M-50)‹C where M is the fusion temperature. The heated assembly is then pressed to a reduction ratio of 1À5-2 without restricting movement of the container walls not pressurized, then compressed to a total reduction of <5.6 while restricting movement of said walls. Secondary hot working is then effected to give a reduction ratio of at least 1À5 and the required density. The powder may be Fe or alloy steel and up to 10% graphite, carbides, oxides, nitrides and sulphides may be added. The steel powder may be a water atomized powder.
