Abstract

1318902 Powder metallurgy BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 48801/70 Heading C7D A Cr containing sintered body e.g. Cr or Cr- Ni steel is made from a powder mixture of Fe- Cr and reducible metal compounds at least 35% of the mixture having a particle size < 10 microns. The mixture is compacted or slip cast, heated in a reducing atmosphere e.g. H 2 and/or Co and then sintered. The total metal powder content of the mixture is preferably <50% volume and the compounds included are the oxides of Fe, Mo, Ni, which are preferably formed by spray drying. The powder mixture which may also include Mo, Fe/Si and Fe/Mn is preferably <1 micron and is formed by ball milling. Binders such as starch are added and after compaction, preferably extrusion, the compacts are reduced in H 2 and/or CO at 930-1200‹ F. and sintered at 1830-2450‹ F. to form wires or tubes of Type 300 or 400 stainless steels.
