Abstract

1527761 Directional couplers DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 26 Jan 1976 [11 Feb 1975 10 March 1975] 5839/75 and 9920/75 Heading H1W A directional coupler comprises a pair of interdigitated comb-lines 4, 5 arranged on one side of a substrate 1 which bears an earth plane 2 on the other side. Electromagnetic coupling exists predominantly between the fingers. For symmetrical combs (l 1 =l 2 ), energy transfer is sinusoidally periodic in length (L) at a given frequency and periodic in frequency for a given length. The transfer varies between total and zero. A 3 db. coupler may be obtained by proper choice of L, l 1 and l 2 (l 1 Œl 2 ). The outputs are in quadrature. A further substrate and earth plane may be added to produce a triplate construction.
