Abstract

1527156 Fluorinated alcohols from iodides ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 28 June 1976 [30 June 1975] 26821/76 Heading C2C Fluorinated alcohols of general formula wherein x is 0 or 1; Y is H, phenyl, C 1-5 alkyl, C 3-8 alicyclic or -CH 2 R<SP>1</SP>, with the proviso that x = 1 when Y is -CH 2 R<SP>1</SP>, and wherein R and R<SP>1</SP>, same or different, are each at least partially fluorinated hydrocarbon radicals optionally including at least one heteroatom, interrupting the chain or ring of carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting a compound of formula with SO 3 in a reaction medium comprising liquid SO 2 , separating I 2 formed, recovering the reaction intermediate from the resulting liquor and treating with water to form the desired alcohol. Preferably SO 3 is used in an amount up to about 1 mole in excess of the stoichiometric amount. The reaction mixture preferably contains less than 1 wt.% of water. The liq. SO 2 is usually employed in an amount of 25-200 g. per g. of SO 3 and the reaction temperature is preferably - 30 to + 50‹ C. Amongst the examples the products 5-perfluoroisopropoxy-4,4,5,5-tetrafluoro-pentan-2-ol and 1,1,1,2,3,3-hexahydroperfluoroundecan-2-ol are obtained.
