Abstract

1531524 IC engines with exhaust recirculation and after burning NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 30 April 1976 [30 April 1975] 17677/76 Heading F1B The exhaust passages of adjacent engine cylinders Cl to C4 have common outlet passages 24a, 24b and air is supplied to passages. The exhaust gas is treated in a thermal or catalytic oxidation reactor 26 and is recirculated through a conduit 30 to the intake manifold 18 in a volume from 10 to 50% of that of the intake air, the valve 34 being operated responsive to carburetter Venturi vacuum. The cylinders have two spark-plugs 28a, 28b. The air supply to the passages 24a, 24b may be caused by vacuum in the exhaust passages or provided by an engine driven pump 44. The flow of air may be controlled by a valve 52 in an air discharge path 50 operated in accordance with intake manifold vacuum to provide an air-flow 20 to 25% by volume of the engine intake air volume. At over-running air may be supplied to the manifold 18 through a manifold vacuum responsive valve 60. The engine is supplied by a carburetter 20 providing an air-fuel ratio ranging from 12 to 16:1.
