Abstract

1520110 Rotary heat exchanger BRITISH STEEL CORP 31 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 47199/74 Heading F4K A rotary heat exchanger comprises a rotatable disc-like matrix 12, Fig. 1, in communication with passages 28 and 24 (respectively for hot waste gas and cooled waste gas) and passages 22 and 26 (respectively for cool air and heated air). Seals are provided at the end of each passage and adjacent the matrix so as to prevent leakage between the passages 26 and 28 and between the passages 22 and 24. Each seal has a straight portion 30 and an arcuate portion 32 and comprises a series of blocks 34 Fig. 3, around the perimeter of its passage, each block 34 being pneumatically urged into contact with the matrix 12. A gas for purging the matrix is introduced thereto between the seals of two adjacent passages. As shown the purging gas is introduced through a conduit 48, Fig. 4, to a space 66 between sealing blocks 34 of the seals of adjacent passages. The blocks 34 are of hard material and may comprise a ceramic, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, alumina or a high temperature resistant metal. The blocks are so shaped that each block of a seal interfits with the next in line so as to prevent gas leakage but allow limited pivoting therebetween (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown). The matrix disc may have an overall diameter of 15 ft. with circular cross-section passages 14 of ¢-inch diameter, the sealing blocks 34 at their sealing surfaces 42 being 1 inch thick. In a modification there are two pairs of gas passages opening on to each end face of the matrix.
