Abstract
1310097 Heating gases by direct contact with hot solids; heat transmitting media SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT GmbH 24 May 1971 [16 July 1970] 16737/71 Headings F4K and F4U [Also in Division H5] Gas to be heated is passed through passages 2 formed in a graphite block 1 heated by a removable resistance heating element 3 disposed in an opening 7 in the block. The opening is closed by a plate 5 made of aluminium oxide or boron nitride, and sealing elements 6, e.g. flexible graphite foils, are provided between the plate and block and between the plate and heating element 3. The heating element 3, as shown, comprises two concentric graphite or carbon tubes joined together at one end. Alternatively a U-shaped, W-shaped, or spiralshaped element may be used. In use the graphite block, or a number of blocks (see Fig. 5) arranged end to end, are disposed in a steel container lined with ceramic insulating material; an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen at a pressure above that of the gas to be heated fills the container to prevent diffusion losses. The graphite blocks may alternatively be of cylindrical shape (see Figs. 3 and 4) and have gas passages (9) of circular cross-section.
