Abstract

1515594 Improving green strength of tyre blanks POLYSAR Ltd 26 March 1976 12215/76 Heading B7C In the manufacture of a pneumatic tyre including a plurality of carcass plies having parallel cords, e.g. of steel, rayon, glass, nylon, polyester, or cotton, arranged at a cord angle of 75-90 degrees to the mid circumferential plane, the uncured rubber of each carcass ply comprises a synthetic rubber having labile cross links to provide green strength thereto, the synthetic rubber being an SBR rubber containing bound tertiary amine groups in the polymer chains, the polymer having been reacted with a dihalogen compound which reacts with the amine groups. The uncured carcass rubber allows the assembled carcass (including bead cores and an inner liner) to be expanded from a cylindrical state into its toroidal state without an undue loss of strength in the carcass rubber. The carcass ply rubber may also include natural rubber and/or other synthetic rubber. The tertiary amine group may contain monomers, e.g. dimethylaminoethyl. The other synthetic rubber may be polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene. Many examples of dihalogen compounds are given in the Specification, as are specific examples of the amounts of the ingredients for the carcass ply rubber. The cords of the carcass plies may be treated with adhesive to improve their adhesion to the rubber of those plies.
