Abstract

1508671 Slagging gasifiers BRITISH GAS CORP 9 Dec 1976 [27 Nov 1975] 48812/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division F4] In a method of operating a slag tap gasifier having a burner 8 located beneath the slag tap orifice 4, sepatate primary and secondary combustion-sustaining gas supplies containing at least some of the oxygen required for combustion at the burner are mixed with a fuel gas supply, the secondary gas being supplied to a region between the primary gas supply and the slag tap orifice; in use, the secondary gas supply is arranged to mix with the primary gas supply and the fuel gas so that the burner operates in an excess oxygen atmosphere, so that the molten pool of slag is maintained at a high temperature and any carbon dissolved in the slag is reacted with excess oxygen. An annular burner suitable for use in the gasifier is shown in Figure 2, and has a primary air inlet 14 communicating with outlet ports 16, a fuel gas inlet 17 communicating with outlets ports 19, and a secondary air inlet port 20 communicating with outlet ports 22. Adequate mixing of the primary air and gas is ensured by inwardly directing the ports 16, 19 towards one another, as shown.
