Abstract

1504967 Laying sheet material on the soil PETER WARING Ltd P J WARING and L J PEARSON 26 Feb 1976 [28 Feb 1975] 8444/75 Heading A1E Flexible sheet material such as polythene, is laid down as a mulch or to cover the soil during fumigation treatment, by a machine having a supply roll 60 of the sheet material and a disc 72 pressing an edge of the material into the ground. A roller 76 tracking the disc then compacts the soil. If several overlapping strips are to cover an area, the other edge of the strip being laid is pressed by a "tacking" disc 74 into the ground to a depth less than that to which the first edge is pressed, and a compacting roller 76 compacts the soil just outside the path of the disc 74. Subsequently the next strip is laid in overalpping relation and the disc 72 presses the overlapping edges into the soil. In order to prevent a sheet splitting as its edges are forced into the soil, it is either lapped by being passed between skids 62, the lap being maintained by passing the sheet beneath a roller 66, or a plurality of skids bear alternately on opposite sides of the sheet to form corrugations.
