Abstract

1491694 Flat-cable connector BUNKER RAMO CORP 4 Dec 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 52501/74 Heading H2E A connector for a flat cable 12 which is ribbed in correspondence with the conductors thereof, comprises a support body 24 with a slot 98 for receiving the cable; a plurality of contact guide passages 108 intersecting the slot through one major surface of the slot, the major surface being grooved 104 to mate with the ribbed cable; and a contact body 22 carrying insulation - piercing contacts 66 insertable through the passages each contact having two prongs 72, 73 which straddle a corresponding conductor and cut through the insulation thereof. In an embodiment the connector has four parts, a cover 20, the contact body 22, the cable support 24 and a strain relief member 26. The strain relief member may be dispensed with in one embodiment (Fig. 15, not shown). The cover, body, support and member fit together at their edges by posts and sockets. The cover 20 has apertures 28 for receiving pins. The contacts 66 hvae an edge 74 resting on a surface 60 (Fig. 5) to prevent the contacts moving downwards and a barb 78 to prevent upward movement. A pin passing through an aperture 28 makes contact with springs 76. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5A, not shown) upward movement of the contacts is prevented by an extension (76a) of one of the springs 76 that abuts the underside of the cover 20. The cable support 24 has wells 112 to receive the prongs 72, 73 and preferably a 180 degree rounded surface 106 about which the flat cable is wrapped. The strain relief member 26 (Fig. 13) has ridges 122, 124, 134 to secure the cable, the ridges 122 and 124 being used when the cable is led out horizontally and ridges 122 and 134 when the cable is led out through passage 126. In other embodiments (Figs. 16 and 17, not shown) the member has three ridges (154) to hold a horizontal cable or a modified support (160) is used with a relief member (170) that jams the cable in place.
