Abstract

1491519 Feeding dissimilarly sized particles into a shaft furnace MIDREX CORP 18 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 54699/74 Heading F4B Iron ore in the form of pellets together with fines is fed into a shaft furnace 10 through a proportionating hopper 41 and tubes 58, the lower ends of the tubes 58 being nearer the furnace's side wall than its vertical axis 60. Cones 62 at the tube ends cause the pellets to roll outwardly and the fines to pass vertically downwardly from the cones' edges. Thereby, the fines form an annular array of columns 66. The ore passes downwardly through the furnace against a current of reducing gases (H 2 and CO) which enter and leave respectively at 31 and 39. From the bottom of the furnace, the reduced ore passes through a cooler 20 with inert cooling gas passing therethrough from a source 26. The ore feeding apparatus comprises an oscillating fines distributor 47 which ensures that, within a bin 44, the fines are uniformly dispersed between the pellets. If one of the tubes 58 becomes blocked, the temperature of the material within the tube rises and this is sensed by a thermocouple (70), Fig. 2 (not shown). A signal from the thermocouple automatically causes water to flow from a pipe 80 and through the tubes 58 to unblock them. The pipe 80 may alternatively be in the bin 44. The water pipe could be operated at periodic intervals independently of the thermocouple to periodically wash the tubes 58.
