Abstract

1490520 Multi-spindle lathes INTEC Ltd 14 Nov 1974 [20 Nov 1973] 53825/73 Headings B3T and B3B A multi-spindle automatic lathe has at least two work stations into which each spindle can be indexed to permit a machining operation to be carried out on a workpiece carried by the spindle and comprises means operable to bring a spindle into a respective predetermined orientation at each of the two work stations and being operable to bring the spindle, at one at least of the work stations, subsequently into a second predetermined orientation and to maintain that orientation for the duration of a further machining operation. The spindles are provided with clutch and brake units c, b operable when in the work station by a cam drum a via a lever w. When the spindle q is brought to rest in the work station, the clutch and brake are rendered inoperative and an air motor f with pinion e is moved into engagement with a ring gear d on the spindle and whereby the spindle is rotated to a predetermined orientation determined by a stop or stops k 1 , k 11 on a stop ring g on the spindle, the motor f being maintained in a stall condition to keep the stops in engagement displaceable plunger n whilst machining is in operation. When the first machining operation is completed, with the plunger engaging the stop k 1 , the plunger is momentarily retracted to permit the spindle to move round under the power of the air motor until the stop k 11 is engaged by the plunger n whereat the second machining operation can take place. The lathe operation may be programme controlled by way of cams and cam drums which control the desired sequence of machining operations required.
