Abstract

1485526 Carbon-containing refractory material VYSKUMNY USTAV HUTNICKEJ KERAMIKY 12 Dec 1974 53735/74 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division C5] A carbon-containing refractory material comprises in a dry condition from 10 to 99% by wt. of calcinated anthracite (as defined) or thermoanthracite (as defined) or a mixture thereof together with 1 to 50% by wt. of a binding agent compatible and capable of being worked with water. Calcinated anthracite and thermoanthracite are both heat treated before being admixed with a binder, the former being heated to more than 1200‹ C., the latter to between 700‹ and 1200‹ C., both heat treated anthracites containing up to 2% of volatile components. The binding agent may be a clay or a solid coal pitch, liquid or solid water glass or a phosphate binding agent (e.g. orthophosphoric acid, a primary aluminium orthophosphate or a secondary ammonium orthophosphate) either alone or mixed with clay and/or solid coal pitch. The carbon-containing refractory material may also contain up to 40% by wt. (in the dry condition based on the total wt. of the material) of a carbonaceous admixture such as graphite, silicon carbide foundry or metallurgical coke or pitch or oil coke (or mixtures thereof), and up to 30% by wt. in the dry condition (based on the total wt. of the material) of a non-carbonaceous material, e.g. quartz or the other silica, aluminosilicate, corundum, mullite, or a mixture thereof.
