Abstract
1496153 Lining ingot mould base-plates FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 20 March 1975 [3 May 1974] 19611/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] In order to extend the life of the base plates of ingot moulds, the base plate of a two part ingot mould is recessed and in the cavity so formed is inserted a composition of particulate SiC, a minor proportion of non-metallic fibrous material and a bonding agent. The composition may be pre-formed, fired and set into the recess using a setting material of the same composition to avoid cracking, or may be formed in situ. The fibrous material (1-20%) may be glass fibre, mineral, rock or slag wool, alumino- or zirconium silicate fibres, zirconia, alumina or Ca silicate fibres or preferably carbon fibres. Organic or inorganic fibres, i.e. cotton, wool, rayon, &c. may be used; polyacrylonitrate fibres being particularly preferred. The SiC should be in the size range 0À05-3 mm., and the binder is preferably clay, phosphate aluminate, silicate or chlorohydrate. Other refractory oxides or silicates, together with graphite, tar, pitch may be present. Ferro alloys, i.e. FeSi may also be present The compositions is formed by blending the ingredients in a mixer, and either forming in situ or by pressing, extruding &c., and drying and firing. Firing temperature depends on the binder used, clay being fired at 1100-1500‹ C., chlorohydrate being fired at about 400‹ C. Examples of the composition are:
