Abstract
1481280 Chain tensioners DAIMLER-BENZ AG 15 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 34124/75 Heading F2Q In an hydraulically-actuated chain tensioning apparatus, a pivoted member 18 is urged against a chain 14 by a nose portion 27 of a piston 21 in a cylinder 20 and an hydraulic fluid under pressure is supplied through a non-return valve 26 located downstream of a supply duct 25, wherein the duct 25 slopes downwards in the direction of flow, and another passage 35 forming a throttling orifice leading into a low-pressure space 40 is disposed at a high level in the downward slope of duct 25. The source of hydraulic fluid may be the lubricating oil circuit of a reciprocating-piston engine, although such oil commonly includes a large amount of air entrapped. Air bubbles in the oil will rise up the sloping path of duct 25, in a direction opposite to that of the flow. Bubbles or foam reaching the passage 35 then become flushed away through the throttling orifice. The sloping arrangement of the duct 25 ensures that a reserve quantity of de-aerated oil is retained and does not drain away when the engine is stopped. A pressure-limiting valve 37 prevents any excessive pressure which might result from small pumping movements of piston 21 in oscillation when the cylinder is already full of oil.
