Abstract

1476241 Arc-rupturing in switches SQUARE D CO 2 May 1974 [29 May 1973 (2)] 19256/74 Heading H1N [Also in Division C3] An arc-extinguishing material, to be arranged so as to be exposed to the arc in an arc-producing electrical device, e.g. as an arc shield, an arc chute frame casing, or an arc chamber coating, consists of at least one non-toxic compound of Ag, Pt, Au, Ta, Cu, Co, Re, W, B, Pd, Sb, Te, Zn or Se, said compound(s) being decomposable by the arc to give non-toxic products at least one of which has an affinity for electrons and containing no elements of first ionization potential less than that of silver (7À54 eV), optionally with a high-molecular weight binder, the material having an atomic concentration of carbon not exceeding 15%. An exemplary material consists of 55À8 wt. per cent of a commercial hydrated zinc borate and 44À2 wt. per cent of a commercial polydimethylsiloxane binder.
