Abstract

1474916 I.C. exhaust converter BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 14 Oct 1974 [24 July 1973] 35296/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division G3] A catalyst system for treating the exhaust gases from internal-combustion engines includes a pumped secondary air supply, a diaphram-operated valve arranged to cut off the supply of secondary air to the catalyst, catalyst temperature sensor means adapted to detect if the catalyst approaches a predetermined overheat temperature, a normallyclosed solenoid-operated valve connected to the sensor means and arranged to connect a first side of the diaphragm to the inlet manifold when the sensor means detects that the catalyst has reached a predetermined temperature approaching overheat temperature, means connecting the second side of the diaphragm to the secondary air supply, and bleed means connecting the secondary air supply to the said first side of the diaphragm. As shown, the flow of secondary air to a catalytic exhaustgas converter along passages 27, 28 is controlled by valve 25 which when operated allows the air to escape at 20. Valve 25 is operated by diaphragm 11 and is normally urged to the open position as shown by spring 26. Inlet 31 is adapted for connection to the inlet manifold of the engine and when solenoid valve 17 is operated by a temperature sensor in the catalyst low pressure from the manifold causes operation of the diaphragm.
