Abstract

1472591 Supplying secondary combustion air COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 9 Jan 1975 [9 Jan 1974] 993/74 Heading F4W A closed solid fuel fired space and/or water heater comprises a combustion chamber 40, a primary air inlet 42, a partition 22 between the chamber 40 and a flue 24, the lower end of the partition 22 being spaced from a grate 10 to define an opening 23 for entry of combustion products into the flue 24 and a secondary air inlet duct 50 terminating at a location within the partition 22 which partition is provided with means for directing the secondary air into the combustion chamber 40, into the opening 23, and into the flue 24. In the form shown, the partition 22 is of hollow integral construction and includes sets of air outlets 52 to 60. Primary and secondary airflow is induced by natural draught. Airflow through the primary air inlet 42 is controlled by a closure plate actuated by a thermostat in response to the temperature of the room in which the heater is located or of water in a boiler 44. A door 30 includes transparent panels 32, 34, panel 34 being formed by abutting parallel strips. In an alternative embodiment, the duct 50 terminates within a space (78, Fig. 2) between a first part (70) of the partition and a second part formed by a perforated plate (76) parallel to the first part (70). Secondary air flows into the combustion chamber 40 through the perforations in the plate (76), into the opening 23 from the open lower end of the space (78) and into the flue 24 via at least one passage (72) through the first part (70), which is otherwise solid.
