Abstract

1471864 Expansion bolts F L HOWARD and D PYCROFT 9 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 16487/73 Heading F2H A fixing device comprises a bolt 10 having a shank 11 and a head 12, a nut 20 threaded on the shank, a rigid sleeve 18 around the shank between the head and the nut, and a deformable sleeve 17 of flexible material around the shank between the rigid sleeve and the head such that tightening of the nut causes axial compression and hence radial expansion of the deformable sleeve 17, the end 19 of the sleeve 18 adjacent sleeve 17 and/or a portion 14 of the shank adjacent the head 12 being tapered and being initially disposed outside the sleeve 17 so that on tightening the nut it enters the adjacent end of the deformable sleeve 17 and radially expands it independently of its radial expansion resulting from axial compression. As shown the tapered portion 14 has indentations 15 and associated ridges to prevent rotation of the sleeve 17 and the sleeve 17 is of a resilient material such as rubber. In other embodiments (such as that shown in Fig. 5) the deformable sleeve is non-resilient but flexible metal tube, e.g. of annealed copper, having a slit end portion adapted to be radially expanded. There may be several such deformable sleeves 23, 24, 25 around the same bolt 110. The device can be used in a blind bore (as in Fig. 5) or in a through bore (as in Fig. 4, not shown).
