Abstract

EKTNO-KONSTRUKTOR I TEKHNOL INST ELEKTROSVAROCH OBURUDOVANIYA 20 June 1974 27468/74 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] Plasma arc welding or cutting apparatus comprises an electrode 16 surrounded by a nozzle 12 interconnected by a high voltage, high frequency oscillator 14 operation of which causes a high frequency arc to be produced between the nozzle 12 and electrode 16 which ionizes the gas fed into the nozzle so permitting a pilot arc to be developed between the electrode 16 and nozzle 12, the pilot arc being fed from a thyristor type power supply 15 by way of an RC circuit, the pilot arc being instrumental in the striking of the main arc between the electrode 16 and a workpiece 13 the supply 15 also supplying the main arc by way of an inductor L. With the pilot arc only alight the pilot arc current is determined by the RC combination but when the main arc is struck the capacitor C becomes fully charged whereupon the pilot arc current is reduced and is determined only by the resistor R. The resistor R may be variable and controlled so as to have a minimum value when the pilot arc only is alight and to have a maximum value when the main arc is burning. A switch may be placed in series with the resistor R which is opened when the main arc is struck thereby terminating the pilot arc current flame. A similar mode of operation is obtained by placing a diode in series with the resistor.
