Abstract

1,146,283. Arc systems. AIR PRODUCTS Ltd. 15 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 10882/65. Heading H2H. A D.C. arc 14, 15 is started and maintained by a series of high voltage D.C. pulses of the same polarity as the arc produced by an inverter 17 coupled to a transformer 34 and a ladder network 18 the output of which is connected to the arc through a capacitor 39 which is repeatedly discharged through a spark gap 40. The inverter input is connected across the arc so that it is disabled when the arc is struck. The inverter may be of the ringing choke transistor type 17 fed from a network 19 compensating for changes in opencircuit voltage. In a welding arrangement, an argon gas solenoid-operated valve 20 may be energized simultaneously with the inverter on operation of a manual switch 25 on the welding torch which solenoid is maintained energized for a short period after cessation of welding by a timing circuit 21, which also disconnects the inverter and closes the gas valve, say four seconds after closure of the switch 25 should the are not strike. A crater eliminator circuit (not shown) may be included which operates by switching resistors progressively into the arc circuit before termination of the arc current.
