Abstract

1470184 Wheel cutters; tube holders; flaring tube ends IMPERIAL-EASTMAN CORP 27 March 1974 [22 June 1973] 13613/74 Headings B3W and B3J A tube-working device comprises a tube holder, a tube cutter which does not operate on a tube held by the holder and a single, manually-operated mechanism for actuating the cutter and the holder concurrently. As shown, Fig. 5, a cutter carrier 59 is slidable between plates (29a), 29b, projections 62 running in slots 63. The tube holder comprises interleaved plates, each plate consisting of separate portions 36-38 but alternate plates, consisting of portions designated (36<SP>1</SP>)-(38<SP>1</SP>), being inverted, Fig. 9 (not shown). The portions 37, (37<SP>1</SP>) are interconnected and fixed to the plates (29a), 29b by pins 49 and rivet 50. The portions 36, (36<SP>1</SP>) are interconnected by pins 51, and a pin 52, which runs in slots 35 in the plates (29a), 29b, and are connected to a threaded member 19. Rotation of member 19 causes the portions 38, (38<SP>1</SP>) to slide along slots 41, 41<SP>1</SP> to vary the size of the opening 56. A lug 60 in the cutter carrier 59 engages a groove 61 in the plates so that rotation of member 19 also varies the gap 80 between a cutter which 14 and tube support 64. The cutter is moved to bite progressively into a tube while the device is swung around the tube, the arrangement being such that at the end of a cutting operation the opening 56 is slightly larger than the tube diameter. The tube having been easily inserted, one turn of the member 19 clamps the tube in the holder for an end-flaring operation by a screw-operated cone 26, Fig. 2. A handle 17 on the member 19 comprises limbs 70, 71 each pivoted at 75 to a block 74 and housing a spring-loaded plunger 76. During clamping, the limbs are spread as shown in Fig. 4; during cutting the limbs are pivoted to lie parallel with each other to form a knob, the spring-loaded plungers snapping past corners 79 of the block 74 with a toggle action. The limbs pivot in the opposite direction to the broken line position, if the device is dropped.
