Class 61 A clamp comprises a post to which a clamping jaw is fixed by a lateral pivot and which is slidably guided in a guide hole in a member having a clamping jaw or base adapted to be clamped to a table, the post having a longitudinal row of localized ratchet teeth forming part of a unidirectional clutch another part of which is connected to the said member and consists of a spring loaded plunger having complementary teeth. As shown in Fig 1 a clamp comprises a foot 1 having an upwardly extending part 2 in which a cylindrical post 3 is slidable and rotatable. The foot has a rectangular projection 19 adapted to engage a slot in a table. A lever 4 having a clamping arm 5 and an angularly disposed arm 7 is pivoted at 61 to the post 3 and carries an adjusting screw 8 adapted to bear on the post. A row of ratchet teeth 11 are provided on a flat on the post 3. Mating teeth are provided on a square plunger 14 slidable in a radial housing 12 of the tubular part 2, the plunger being urged into engagement with the post by a compression spring 17 and a screw 71 screwed into the end of the housing 12. To release the clamp the screw 8 is turned to remove the clamping presure and the post 3 is rotated so that the ratchet teeth 11 are displaced angularly about the centre of the post. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown) the post is slidably but non- rotatably mounted in a socket connected to the foot.- The block carrying the complementary ratchet teeth is slidably mounted in an arm rotatably mounted on the post, the arm being rotated to move the teeth on the block out of register with those on the post. In another modification, Fig. 7, a C clamp comprises a jaw 40 fixed to a post 41 having ratchet teeth 42 cooperating with complementary ratchet teeth on a block 43 loaded by a compression spring 44 and slidable in a lug 45 provided on the jaw 46 having the usual screw 47, the post being. slidable and rotatable in a part 48 of the jaw 46. In another modification usable as a C-clamp, Fig. 8, (not shown) the construction of the clamping lever 4 is similar to that shown in Fig 1, the device for adjusting one jaw towards the other being similar to that described with reference to Fig. 4.
