Abstract

1466784 Counterpressure filling head CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 11 March 1974 [12 March 1973] 10845/74 Heading B8T A counterpressure filling head 10, for carbonated liquids, comprises a valve housing member 14, slidably telescoped within an upper housing member 12, and which is lowered by a box cam 16 to seal the container (C) (Fig. 1, not shown), on a sealing bell assembly 20, and a counterpressure valve 61, opened by cam 97 to supply pressure from a counterpressure line 60, via passageways 63-65 to the valve assembly 30 and into the container (C). As the pressure in the container (C) builds up, back pressure on the piston 48 raises the spring loaded valve 30 and opens the product line 36 and valve 33 for flow of the liquid product, via a product distributor 27, into guide cone 23 and container (C). When the liquid level in the container (C) reaches the lower end of a probe 45, the probe 45 activates an electric circuit to open valve 80 and admit compressed air, from the air line 75, to the space above the piston 48 and so close the valve 30 and shut off the product line 36. The supply line 36 has a member 125 which creates turbulence and a pressure drop in the liquid product to minimize foaming. In the embodiment of Fig. 13, the filling head 10 has a control pressure manifold 158 connected by a conductor 161 to a solenoid 156 which actuates the valve 155. Pressurized air enters the space above piston 134, forcing it downward. The probe 131 is fastened to a collar 132 which moves upwardly and downwardly with the piston 134. A counterpressure channel 151 is filled with gas at counterpressure to apply pressure to the counterbalance ring 149 and so reduce the downward force, applied to the container (C), necessary for an effective seal. The probe may be in two parts, Fig. 14 (not shown) with the thinner lower part extending downwards, for greater penetration of the container, such as in bottle filling. In both Figs. 13, 14, an electrical circuit is closed by means of the liquid level contacting the probe 131, and so actuate the solenoid 156 to open the control pressure valve 155, and allow compressed air to depress the piston 134. This closes the product valve and breaks the circuit.
