Abstract

1372566 Counterpressure filling machine CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 15 Oct 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 47995/71 Heading B8T A counter pressure container filling machine for carbonated liquids has means for creating extreme turbulence and a high pressure drop in the product delivery line immediately prior to entering the filling head in order to minimize foaming. An open top container (C), Fig. 1 (not shown), is positioned below a sealing bell assembly 20, and a movable valve housing member 14 lowered by box cam 16 to seal the container on rubber ring 21. Counterpressure valve 61, opened by operation of cam 97, supplies pressure from input tube 60, via passageways 63-65 to valve assembly 30 and into container C. As the pressure in the container C equalizes, back pressure on piston 48 raises valve 30 and opens product line 36 and valve 33, and the carbonated product, which is in a highly turbulent state after passing through restrictor 125, which also produces a high pressure drop, passes at high speed with a minimum of foaming through passage 35 into recess 31 past open valve 33 into guide core 23 and into container C. The counterpressure lifting piston 48 also engages upper tip 59 of probe 45 with contact 57, so that when the liquid level in the container C rises to latch the bottom of probe 45, an electrical circuit actuates valve 80, opens it and admits compressed air above piston 48 to close valve 30 and shut off product line 36. Counterpressure gas flow back through line 60 and valve 61, and when the container is filled cam 97 closes valve 61, housing 14 being raised by box cam 16 to release the filled container. As housing 14 reaches its uppermost position, magnet 93 operates normally closed switch (94), Fig. 8 (not shown), to reset the apparatus for the next container. The compressed air operating piston 48 is exhausted through passageway 87. An automatic control to prevent supply of counterpressure or product is incorporated if the container is absent. Restrictor 125 may be of different forms, e.g. small bore pipes, twisted vanes &c.
