Abstract
1466743 Treating trees W G HAMMOND and W LLOYD-JONES 23 May 1975 [2 April 1974] 14485/74 Heading AlE A device for injecting fluid into a predrilled hole 26 in a porous medium e.g. a tree trunk, comprises an elongate main body 10 having holding means e.g. self tapping screw thread 12 at or adjacent the one end 11 to retain the main body in the hole 26, sealing means 17 being axially spaced from the end 11 and adapted to seal against the outer surface of the medium, and an outlet port 18 being located between the holding means and the sealing means, the port 18 communicating with a fluid inlet e.g. via connector 19 to the main body. The sealing means 17 preferably comprises a neoprene seal and a rigid washer 16 abutting a flange 14 on the body 10, the seal having a part-spherical face to seal against a frusto-conical face 28 in the hole. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3) the holding means comprises a gland washer 44 radially expanded into engagement with the hole in the medium by axial compression achieved by turning a screw-threaded pressure sleeve 50 on the main body 40. The sleeve 50 axially moves thrust sleeve 45 against the washer 44. Axial movement of the sleeve 45 also engages seal 49 with the outer surface of the medium. In use fluid is injected into the xylem/bast region of the tree.
