Description
54) INJECTION NOZZLE
(71) We, RENTOKIL LIMITED, a
British Company of Felcourt, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 2JY, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement;
This invention relates to an injection nozzle for the injection of a fluid simultaneously into two or more linearly spacedapart sections of an article. The injection nozzle is particularly suitable for use in the impregnation of masonry and mortar with, for example, a damp-proofing fluid.
The standard method of treating nineinch solid masonry with damp-proofing consists of the separate treatment of the inner and outer half-sections of masonry. Typically, a hole of about three-inch depth is first drilled in the outer half-section and this half-section is injected with the fluid using a nozzle with one outlet at its end. The inner half-section is then treated by one of two methods: either the three-inch hole is extended to a depth of about 72 inches and a similar longer nozzle is used or a new three-inch hole is drilled from the inner face of the wall and the original nozzle used.
This invention provides an injection nozzle for the injection of a fluid simultaneously into two or more linearly spaced-apart sections of an article, which nozzle has two or more fluid outlets, one outlet being provided at the end of the nozzle and the remaining outlet or outlets being positioned along the length of the nozzle with a seal being provided between the or each pair of adjacent fluid outlets such that, when the nozzle is in position in the article in a hole having a diameter slightly larger than that of the nozzle, the or each seal engages or can be caused to engage the wall of the hole thus dividing the hole into two or more sections each containing a fluid outlet.
Preferably, the or each seal comprises a section of resilient tubing, for example elastomeric polyurethane tubing, arranged along the length of and coaxially with the nozzle, and the nozzle is provided with means for applying a compressive force to the or each section of tubing thereby causing it or them to expand radially and engage the wall of the hole.
The invention also provides a method of injecting a fluid simultaneously into two or more linearly spaced-apart sections of an article which comprises drilling a single hole through all but the more or most remote section or sections and into the more or most remote section of the article, inserting into the hole an injection nozzle according to the invention, adjusting the seal or seals of the said nozzle so as to cause it or them to form a seal against the wall of the hole thereby isolating sections of the hole each containing a fluid outlet, and injecting fluid through the nozzle via the fluid outlets into the isolated sections.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a section through one form of injection nozzle according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the injection nozzle comprises a tube 1 having a central bore 2, the tube 1 having an external screw-thread 3 at one end and an external screw-thread 4 at the other end. The tube 1 has an outlet opening 5 intermediate between its ends. A collar 6 having a hole 7 drilled axially through it is screwed onto the screw-thread 3.Then sequentially are arranged along the length of the tube 1, a first seal 8 consisting of a length of flexible tubing having elastic properties, a section of metal tube 9, a second seal 10 also consisting of a length of flexible tubing, a section of metal tube 11 having a central bore of diameter greater than the external diameter of the tube 1 and having a radial bore 12 so that fluid can flow from outlet 5 through the annular cavity between tubes 1 and 11 and escape through bore 12, a third seal 13 again consisting of a length of flexible tubing 13, a packing washer 14, an '0' ring seal 15 and, finally, a thrust tube 16 machined to retain the '0' ring seal 15. The screw-thread 4 on the tube 1 is screwed into one end of a length of tubing 17 which, at the other end, has an internally screw-threaded portion 18 for connection to a source of injection fluid (not shown).The outer surface of the screw-threaded portion 18 is machined to a hexagon configuration. The exterior of tube 17 is machined with a screw-thread 19, which carries an internally screw threaded collar 20 fitted with a tommy bar. Movement of the collar 20 along the screw-thread 19 applies or releases the thrust tube 16, thereby radially expanding the seals 8, 10 and 13, or releasing them so that they can return to their normal state.
When using this injection nozzle, a hole of sufficient diameter to receive the nozzle with a fairly close tolerance is drilled into the masonry or into a mortar joint between adjacent masonry units or into another article into which fluid is to be injected, the nozzle is inserted into the hole and the collar 20 is tightened to distort the seals 8, 10 and 13 so that they expand radially and seal against the wall of the hole. The nozzle is then connected to a source of injection fluid by making a screw connection at the screwthread 18 and the fluid is pumped through the nozzle so that it is injected into the masonry or other article through outlets 7 and 12. The seals 8, 10 and 13 prevent leakage of fluid into undesired areas.When the collar 20 is released, after the injection of fluid has been terminated, the resilience of the seals 8, 10 and 13 allows them to return to their normal state.
Although the nozzle according to the invention has been particularly described wih reference to the injection of fluids into masonry walls, it will be appreciated that it may alternatively be used for the injection of fluid into two or more linearly spacedapart areas in any material in which it is possible to drill a hole to receive the nozzle and to produce a seal to isolate spaced-apart sections of the hole. Thus, for example, the nozzle may be used for the injection of fluids into felled or standing timber, for example, in the treatment of disease in standing timber.
