Abstract

1466061 Motorcycle steering; wheel hubs R J TAIT 8 April 1974 [9 Jan 1973] 1180/73 Headings B7C and B7E A suspension and steering assembly for the steered wheel 14 of a motorcycle comprises a non-rotary substantially cylindrical hub member 21 on which the wheel 14 is rotatably mounted in use, a raked strut assembly 15 secured at one end to the member 21 and at the other end to a steering head bearing 39 for pivotally connecting the assembly 15 to the motorcycle frame 10, and a radius arm assembly 17 to which the member 21 is pivotally connected at a point radially spaced from the axis of the member 21 for pivotal movement of the assembly 15 and member 21 about an axis 18 spaced from the axis of the member 21 to steer the wheel 14. In the illustrated embodiment the hub member 21 is pivoted on a ball 26 at the head of a stud 27 secured to the crook of a wishbone structure providing a pair of radius arm 31, 32 pivotally connected in use to the frame 10 by pins 33. The stud 27 extends downwardly and rearwardly from the wishbone structure and a boss 23 of the hub member 21 contains opposed cups 24, 25 which receive the ball 26. The strut assembly 15 comprises a pair of sprung telescopic fork legs 36 fixed by screws 37 to the hub member 21 and received in a yoke 38 also mounting handlebars 16. The yoke 38 is secured by a bolt 41 to the inner race of the bearing 39, the outer race of which is attached to a coned rubber mounting 40 for receipt in a corresponding seating in the frame 10. The hub 20 of the front wheel 14 has a central portion to which inturned flanges 45 of radial brake discs 44 are secured. The flanges 45, together with shoulders provided on the member 21, form seatings for ball bearings 22 between the hub 20 and hub member 21. Housings containing friction pads to act on the discs 44 may be formed integrally with the legs 36, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be bolted to the legs 36 either to the front or the rear thereof (Fig. 6, not shown).
