Abstract
1462166 Producing coke from pitch BERGWERKSVERBAND GmbH 14 July 1975 [17 July 1974] 29402/75 Heading C5E In a method of producing premium (acicular) coke, a coal tar pitch having a softening point of 35-180‹ C. (K-S) is filtered at a temperature at least 100‹ C. above its softening temperature, but below its decomposition temperature to remove ash soot and heavy metals and is thereafter coked. A filtration aid such as kieselguhr or activated carbon may be employed and the filtration is preferably performed under pressure. The filtered pitch may be mixed with other carbonaceous solids (70-85%), such as petroleum coke, before coking. In an example, a crude briquetting pitch of softening temperature 75‹ C. (K-S) was filtered using kieselguhr at a temperature of 270‹ C. and pressure of 5 bar, and was thereafter coked in a delayed coker at 480‹ C. and a pressure of 3 atm. gauge.
