Abstract

1462074 Gantry cranes H LIEBHERR 19 Feb 1974 [15 March 1973] 7453/74 Heading B8B] A travelling crane, especially for use on board ship for moving containers 3, comprises a portal frame 5 with a substantially horizontal bridge 6 extending between two substantially vertical side supports 7, each of which terminates in a foot having rotatably mounted wheels 23 running on rails 4 (shown extending along the deck 2 of a ship); and a crab 8 of L-shaped form movable along the bridge 6 and carrying a jib 9 pivotable (on a rotary bearing 14) about a vertical axis. As shown a lifting spreader 12 is suspended from a lifting frame 10 mounted on the free end of the jib 9 on a bearing 13 for rotation about a vertical axis, there being an interconnection between the rotary drive for the jib 9 and the lifting frame 10 to maintain the orientation of the container 3 as the jib 9 is slewed. The crab 8 is mounted on the bridge 6 through rollers 22 engaging square-section rails 20 on two edges of the bridge 6. The jib 9 may be telescopic and one of the side supports 7 may be telescopic or adjustable with respect to the bridge 6 vertically or transversely. There may be two jibs 9 on the crab 8 and there may be two crabs 8.
