Abstract
1460526 Casting ingots; making ingots HEPPENSTALL CO 19 March 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 12179/74 Headings B3F and B3A A method of producing a steel ingot 10 having a refined central zone 24 comprises casting an ingot, forming an axial central cavity 12 through the full length of the ingot, and carrying out an electroslag refining process in the cavity 12 to progressively melt and re-solidify the portion of the ingot around the cavity. The electrode 16 may be either consumable or non-consumable, In the latter case the initially cast ingot is provided with an extension 11 containing sufficient metal to completely fill the cavity 12 when melted. A water-cooled jacket 17 is placed around the extension 11 and sealed to the ingot with material 18 to prevent leakage of molten metal and slag during the melting of the extension 11 during the final stage of the process. The refined central zone 24 of the ingot has a cross-sectional area greater than the crosssectional area of the unmelted annulus surrounding it. The axial central cavity 12 may be formed by forge punching, or trepanning, or by boring or trepanning on a lathe.
