Abstract

1459879 Casting processes GEORG FISCHER AG 10 April 1974 [11 April 1973] 16044/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] Inoculation of molten metal with a stream of particles, for example ferro-silicon, while passing from one metal container to another is carried out by supplying an additive 24 through a conduit 9 having a shaped mouth portion 8 with its axis 10 directed to the bottom of the receiving container 5 so that the additive 24 will turbulently mix with the metal stream 4 from the container 1. The additive 24 is metered from a storage bin 23 below a monitored supply container 25 by a dosing device 16 and conveyed to the melt through conduit 13 by compressed air or pressurized inert gas controlled by devices 14, 15. A central control system (not shown) operates stopper rod 2 in container 1 and initiates additive flow through conduit 9 to give a metered addition to the melt. An alternative embodiment conveys additive 24 to the supply mouth by a vibrated channel 40. In both embodiments, the conduit and mouth areas are made from heat resistant materials or heat insulated. The container 5 may be a tiltable ladle or a throughflow vessel (37) with a lateral outlet which discharges into a mould (46), Fig. 3 (not shown). (For Figures see next page.)
