Abstract
1368921 Casting apparatus AEG-ELOTHERM GmbH 9 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 11495/73 Heading B3F A casting apparatus comprises a furnace 2, an electromagnetic conveying trough 3, and a mould 16, the mould being attached to the upper end of the trough and having a trough-shaped entry 17 forming an extension of the trough 3. The connection between the mould and trough is provided by a plate 14 having an opening forming a sill 15 which rises above the base 13 of the trough and divides the flow of liquid metal. Pneumatically operated clamping elements are provided between the plate 14 and the mould 16, the said elements being adapted to draw the furnace 2 and trough 3 towards the mould. In use, the electromagnetic travelling field produced by the two inductor windings 9 and 10 is such that the rate of flow of metal along the trough 3 is greater than or equal to the maximum rate at which the mould will accept the metal. This ensures that the ingate 18 of the mould is kept full of metal throughout the pouring process. When the mould has been filled, the winding 10 is switched off but the winding 9 remains energized so that molten metal is maintained in the lower portion of the trough 3 while the mould 16 is being replaced. The moulds may be mounted on a turntable or travelling conveyer.
