Abstract

1458079 Treating cotton fibre assemblies to increase absorbancy COTTON Inc 24 June 1974 [25 June 1973] 27948/74 Heading D1F Cotton fibres which have never been dried from their as grown state are "fixed" i.e. treated to prevent the irreversable formation of hydrogen bonds between the basic crystalline cellulosic elements, to increase the absorption of water by the fibres, and formed into a fibre assembly. The fixing may be effected using at least one "blocking agent", i.e. a chemical which is deposited to prevent the hydrogen bonding. The agents may be formaldehyde, acrylamide and dyes. The formation of the fibre assembly may include forming webs or yarn from the fixed fibres, and weaving fabric from the yarn. The fibre assembly may be treated with at least one modifying agent selected from creaseproofing agents, soil release agents, dyes, flame retardants, mercerization compounds, water repellants and fabric softeners.
