Abstract

1456980 Treatment of radioactive waste UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 59275/73 Heading G6R Liquid radioactive waste containing fission products is converted into solid particles which are then coated with an impervious, heat conducting, refractory and mechanically strong coating. The solid particles may be formed by evaporation of the liquid or by a sol-gel process. The particles may be coated first with pyrolytic carbon and then with silicon carbide, silicon nitride, germanium nitride, tungsten carbide, zirconium carbide, or alumina. Coating may be carried out in a fluidized bed or rotary furnace. Silicon carbide may be formed from methyltrichlorosilane or a mixture of silicon tetrachloride and a hydrocarbon, and silicon nitride by reacting silicon tetrachloride and ammonia. The coated particles may be dispersed in a matrix of a carbonaceous material, silicon carbide or stainless steel.
