Abstract
1390096 Nuclear fuel UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25754/72 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel particle having a fission product retaining coating containing carbon is provided with a source of carbon disposed substantially at the centre of the fuel particle, in order to reduce migration of carbon from one part of the coating to another part at lower temperature. In an example, spheroidal carbon seeds are formed from a mixture of carbon powder and furfuryl alcohol, and are coated with UO 2 powder and then with pyrolytic carbon and silicon carbide. The coated particles may be dispersed in a carbon matrix. ThO 2 or PuO 2 may also be used as the nuclear fuel.
