Abstract

1456602 Wells &c PERRY R BASS INC and SID W RICHARDSON FOUNDATION 11 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 16373/74 Heading E1F A well tubing mandrel 12 has an offset pocket 16 with a valve seat 18, a sleeve 22 located in the lower portion of the mandrel adjacent the pocket 16 and having an inclined guide surface 26 leading to a slot 24 for orientating valve handling apparatus 20, and a shoulder 28 for actuating the valve handling apparatus 20. The valve handling apparatus includes a support body 30 attached to a wire by which it is lowered and raised, a shifting arm 32 which is pivoted to the body 30 at 29 and a valve handling support 34 pivoted to he arm 32 at 31 and which carries a valve 19 or a retrieving tool (not shown). The arm 32 is held in an upright position by an abutment 60 (Fig. 2) until the abutment is moved downwardly (relative to body 30) which allows a spring loaded plunger 61 to swing the arm 32 outwardly so that the valve 19 is positioned above pocket 16. The abutment 60 is mounted on a rod 44 which is connected by a shear pin 46 to a spring loaded member 42 carrying a key 48. The apparatus is operated by pulling upwardly on the wire until the key 48 engages shoulder 28 on the mandrel 12, thus releasing arm 32 and allowing it to swing outwardly. The apparatus is released by continued pulling. on the wire which shears pin 46 and allows surface 70 on the body 30 to engage an inclined face 58 on the key 48 to retract the key 48. The apparatus 20 is correctly orientated in relation to the off-set pocket 16 by the guide surface 26 which guides a second key into the slot 24 in the sleeve 22. The second key can be retracted by an arrangement similar to the mechanism for retracting the first key 48. Both keys are pivoted on emergency shear pins which can be sheared if the key retracting mechanisms fail.
