Abstract

688,707. Control of two motors. WESTERN STATES MACHINE CO. June 12, 1950 [June 14, 1949], No. 14655/50. Class 38 (iii) [Also in Group II] The shaft of a centrifugal separator depends from a two speed induction motor MM which drives the separator in one direction during charging and separation. During the discharge of the separator the motor MM and the separator are driven in the opposite direction by a low constant speed motor DM mounted on the motor MM. The motor MM drives one member 40 of a clutch DC by means of belts 56 worm 49 and wheel 48. Air may be supplied to expand a flexible band 42 on the member 40 to engage the other clutch member 36 which is mounted on an extension 34 of the shaft of the motor MM. The separator is rotated from rest by the motor MM to a low speed for charging, and then the speed is increased to a high speed for separation. After separation the motor MM is switched to low speed, the regenerative braking of the motor being assisted by applying a brake to the separator. The motor MM is de-energized, the brake is released, the motor DM started and the clutch engaged to rotate the separator in the opposite direction at low speed. The clutch may be engaged before rotation of the separator ceases in which case the clutch first acts as a brake. After the separator is discharged the motor DM is de-energized, the clutch is disengaged and the brake applied and released to complete the operating cycle of the separator. The switches in the control circuit Fig. 16 (not shown), of the motors are automatically operated after the charging of the separator by means of a circuit Fig. 17 (not shown), which also controls the brake and the mechanism of the separator.
