Abstract

1450291 Flame-retardant masterbatch compositions STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 1 April 1975 [9 April 1974] 15722/74 Heading C3P Masterbatch compositions comprise (1) a flame retardant and (2) a synthetic elastomeric polymer in a weight ratio greater than 4 to 1. The elastomeric polymer may be an ethylene/ propylene copolymer or terpolymer rubber, SBS rubber, nitrile rubber, butyl rubber, silicone rubber or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, and may be in admixture with a non-elastomeric polymer, e.g. polystyrene, ABS, polyolefins, and unsaturated polyesters. The elastomeric polymer may be cross-linked after mixing to reduce volatilization of the flame retardant. Preferred flame retardants do not melt below the processing temperature of the polymer. Examples describe the incorporation in ABS resin, polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene of masterbatches of decabromodiphenyl, hexabromobenzene, tris - (pentabromophenyl) phosphate, pentabromophenyl allyl ether, perchloropentacyclodecane and antimony trioxide in ethylene/propylene rubber, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and butyl rubber.
