Abstract

1448293 Ink jet production GOULD Inc 6 Feb 1974 [7 Feb 1973] 05439/74 Heading B6P Ink jet producing system comprises an electro-acoustic transducer 17 acting on conduit 5 to produce pressure waves in ink 2 which result in drops 13 being formed at nozzle 11. Pressure waves travelling back towards the reservoir 1 are absorbed by means such as a viscoelastic conduit 4 which ensures that no reflected waves pass back to the nozzle 11 and cause undesired drop formation. As shown the transducer 17 is cylindrical with a lead zirconate-lead titanate ceramic tube 20 having electrodes 22, 23 and is radially polarized. The dimensions of the conduit 4 may be determined experimentally by using a second similar but shorter transducer 32 which senses the pressure waves created by the transducer 17 over a range of frequencies applied to it. This produces a graph of the transducer's 32 output against frequency for different conduit constructions, the more even response being preferred.
