1446344 Prostaglandin derivatives PFIZER Inc 13 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 14449/76 Divided out of 1446341 Heading C2C The invention comprises novel compounds (I), wherein Ar is α- or #-furyl, α- or # thienyl, α- or #-naphthyl, 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl, 3,4,5- trimethoxyphenyl, or biphenylyl, n is an integer from 1 to 5, with the proviso that when Ar is substituted phenyl, biphenylyl or naphthyl, n is 1, R is hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, THP is 2-tetrahydropyranyl, W is a single bond or a cis double bond, and Z is a single bond or trans double bond. Compounds of Formula (I) are prepared by (a) reacting compounds of the Formula (IV) with an ylide of the formula to afford compounds of Formula (I) wherein Ar, R, n, THP and Z are as previously defined and W is a cis double bond, and, when required, subsequently hydrogenating the compound thus formed to afford compounds of Formula (I) wherein Ar, R, n, THP and Z are as previously defined and W is a single bond; (b) hydrogenating compounds of Formula (I), wherein Ar, n, R and THP are as previously defined, W is a cis double bond and Z is a trans double bond, to form compounds of Formula (I) wherein Ar, n, R and THP are as previously defined and W and Z are single bonds; (c) selectively hydrogenating compounds of Formula (I), wherein Ar, n, R and THP are as previously defined, W is a cis double bond and Z is a trans double bond, to form compounds of Formula (I) wherein Ar, n, R and THP are as previously defined, W is a single bond and Z is a trans double bond. Compounds (II) are prepared by reacting (I) with chromic acid in aqueous H 2 SO 4 and acetone. Compounds of Formula (III) are prepared by hydrolysing compounds of the Formula (V) wherein Ar, n, R and THP are as previously defined, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R<SP>11</SP> is alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aralkyl of from 7 to 9 carbon atoms, phenyl or substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is a halogen atom or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, trifluoromethyl or phenyl with a base.
