1446342 Phosphonate diesters PFIZER Inc 13 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 13556/76 Divided out of 1446341 Heading C2P The invention comprises phosphonate diesters of the general formula wherein Ar is α- or #-furyl, α- or #-thienyl, 3,4- methylenedioxyphenyl, 3,4,5 - trimethoxyphenyl, α- or #-naphthyl or biphenylyl, R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, and n is an integer from 1 to 5, with the proviso that when Ar is 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl, 3,4,5 - trimethoxyphenyl, biphenylyl, or α- or #-naphthyl n is 1. They may be obtained by reacting an ester wherein R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl with a phosphonate diester (RO) 2 P(O)CH 3 in the presence of N- butyllithium. The products are useful as intermediates for the preparation of prostaglandins.
