1381437 Vitamin A compounds SCM CORP 13 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 17922/73 Heading C2V The invention comprises ethynyl substituted beta-ionol derivatives of formula where R is alkyl, alkenyl, phenyl or aralkyl, which are obtained by ethynylating beta-ionone and then etherifying the hydroxyl group at the tertiary carbon atom. The compounds of Formula I may be first converted to their cuprous acetylenyl derivatives and then reacted with compounds of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or -CO.R<SP>2</SP>, where R<SP>2</SP> is alkyl, phenyl or aralkyl, and R<SP>3</SP> is halogen, to obtain novel compounds of formula The compounds of Formula III may be subjected to semi-hydrogenation to convert the acetylenic bond to an ethylenic bond and obtain a compound of formula which may be hydrolysed to compounds in which R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen if it is not so already, and then reacted with strong bases to remove the OR group and a hydrogen atom and so form an additional double bond resulting in vitamin A. Examples are given.
