Abstract

1446238 Sewing machine BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO 23 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 49395/73 Heading DIG When a row of stitches is formed in a workpiece 16 supported to be movable in any direction in a plane, the needle thread tension is controlled in response to the direction in which the workpiece is moved. As disclosed, stitches formed during movements beyond certain angular limits are rendered abnormal in appearance; this abnormality is hidden by increasing the needle thread tension in that case so that the abnormality is drawn into the work. The machine is controlled by a digital or analog computer 28 which, if the feed direction falls outside the set limit, operates a piston and cylinder device 40 to pivot a lever 36 to vary the tension provided by the tensioner 32. Two preset tensions are provided in the tensioner disclosed. Work feeding. The workpiece 16 is carried on a support 22 mounted for movement about X and Y axes by racks (one, 24, shown) operated by motor driven pinions 24. Shaft encoders may be connected to the racks.
