Abstract

144,424. Dodson, E. April 8, 1919. Spray carburettors.-In a mixed-flow carburettor with a progressively emptied fuel-well of known type, the supply of air to the said well is controlled by a member actuated from the throttle valve, the object being to obtain a relatively weak mixture at all throttle openings except full or nearly full, at which latter openings a rich mixture is obtained for maximum power. The well 9 is fed from the float chamber 1 through a restricted orifice 8 and, from its upper end, feeds the fuel nozzle 10. A perforated air inlet tube 11 projects into the well, the upper end of the tube receiving air, when permitted to do so by a plunger 13, either from the atmosphere direct or, in the case of aircraft, from a " pressure balance system " comprising a pipe 21 which places the top of the float chamber in communication with the air intake 2. The plunger 13 works ..n a barrel 12 provided with an enlargement 15 in communication with the air supply. The plunger is slotted at 14 and the length of slot exposed to the enlargement 15 is determined by a cam 18 on the throttle spindle 19. An independent adjustment of the plunger may be effected by actuating a wedge 16 on a lever 17 from the driver's position. The mechanical connexion between the throttle and plunger may be of the kinds described in Specifications 138,177 and 144,830.
